Prime Small Screen Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Films This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary examines the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the perceived horrors of growing older. The veteran actress delivers a masterful acting turn playing Elisabeth, a mature film star forced into starring in a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she turns to an enigmatic and horrifying treatment known as "The Substance". This generates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in an increasingly parasitic dynamic among both women. October 17th, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful mystery includes the talented actress as Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take a break from covering global conflict to board a luxury cruise accompanied by a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her husband, plus additional affluent passengers. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship overnight and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, the Netflix platform

Presence

Steven Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities with this innovative paranormal narrative filmed completely from the perspective of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and it looks like protective of her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Cage fully commits to his cult stardom through this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed film star playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a celebration on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the potential kingpin, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, evening, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's contained scarefest stands strong without requiring a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, several disappearances has left the children frightened. After Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. However, the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the greedy Jim, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple begin capitalizing on the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain manages to show the character in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's another release from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as precise similar to the collars sported by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent within their ranks from five suspects – among them is his own wife. Each performer are experts of understated style, resulting in an engaging mental battle of truth or lie unfolds. Additional actors take part the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
