Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
