A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
